The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has announced that it intends to grant heritage status to the former residence of Siddharth Shankar Ray, a former Chief Minister of West Bengal. The house, located in the Hazra area, was built in 1900 using red brick and features two stories. Although the building is privately owned and currently used as a homestay, the Municipal Corporation believes that it has significant historical value and should be preserved.

Sandeep Ranjan Bakshi has stated that the organization will take action to protect the building's historical value at any cost. He believes that the house should be included on the heritage list. However, it is unclear whether Siddharth Shankar Ray's successors will agree to this decision.

The house was constructed by Sudhir Kumar Roy, a famous barrister and the father of Siddharth Shankar Ray, who was born in 1920. The building boasts an office and library and has hosted notable figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and Pandit Ravi Shankar. It is often referred to as "Lalbari" due to its red color.

Officials from the Municipal Heritage Conservation Department visited the property last week and spoke with one of the current owners. They will submit a report on the building's status, and a municipal official has indicated that it should be granted heritage status based on its architectural and historical significance.

The house comprises 18 plots on Hazra Road and can accommodate up to six people in its two rooms. The library features a collection of law books and novels, including some that are quite old. Additionally, the office contains autographs from a variety of notable figures, including Indira Gandhi, Mujibur Rahman, Bill Clinton, and the Dalai Lama.
